‘Big Love’ Guest Star Lawrence O’Donnell Talks More Politics

Written on 9 September 2008 by

Perhaps unknown to many fans of the show, Lawrence O’Donnell, who appears in a recurring capacity on HBO’s Big Love
as the family attorney, is actually a political analyst who has had very strong views on certain things.  The producer of The West Wing recently said unsuccessful Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney’s downfall wasn’t due to his Mormon faith.  O’Donnell plays a Mormon lawyer on Big Love, a drama about a fundamentalist Mormon family who practices polygamy.

“It was much more do to with his wealth and his flip-flopping,” clarified O’Donnell.  “Romney is like Arnold Schwarzenegger.  Liberals who turned conservative to further their political careers.”

O’Donnell, 52, is notorious for saying controversial statements of particularly political nature.  In 2004, he shouted “liar” over and over again during a segment on MSNBC while Vietnam veteran John O’Neil was talking.

On Big Love, O’Donnell said fans of the show set in Utah may not be clear if his character, Lee Hatcher, is living the principle of polygamy, which is quite central to the storyline.

“Actually, we shot a scene whereby my three wives walk in and I have to kiss them all,” O’Donnell said.  “So I did my first on-screen kiss ever and it was so awful that they cut it.  I do hope the wives come back though.”

The former Massachusetts governor lost the Republican nomination to former Arizona senator John McCain following the results of the 2008 Super Tuesday primaries, where he lost by 21 points (he did lead in California, Massachusetts, Colorado, and Utah).

Big Love, which returns for its third season in January 2009, stars Bill Paxton, Jeanne Tripplehorn, Chloe Sevigny, Ginnifer Goodwin, and Amanda Sigfried.  Its second season was nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Drama Series in 2007, while Paxton was in contention for Best Actor in a Television Drama.

Big Love: Filming in Woodland for Season 3

Written on 18 August 2008 by

Big Love, the HBO drama about a fundamentalist Mormon family in Utah that practices polygamy, has always filmed in Santa Clarita, northwest of downtown Los Angeles.  And although most of the much awaited third season will still be shot on the show’s main set, fans will be able to see a change of scenery when the series returns with new episodes in January 2009.

In fact, the cast and crew of Big Love is presently in Woodland, California as part of a weeklong filming stint that will take them all over Yolo and the neighboring counties.

According to Wayne Wall, whose company was hired to provide security while Big Love was in town filming, the cast and crew arrived in Woodland last Thursday as part of a storyline that involves a family road trip retracing the step of Joseph Smith, Jr., the founder of Mormonism.  Of course, the production staff would not offer any other information about plot details or the filming schedule since it’s against HBO policy.

Big Love, which counts Tom Hanks as one of its executive producers, stars Bill Paxton as Bill Henrickson, a modern-day polygamist who loves with his three wives, Barbara Dutton Henrickson (Jeanne Tripplehorn), Nicolette Grant (Chloe Sevigny), and Margene Heffman (Ginnifer Goodwin), as well as an avalanche of debt and demands.

Also featured on the series are Amanda Seyfried, Douglas Smith, Shawn Doyle, Bruce Dern, Daveigh Chase, Grace Zabriskie, Harry Dean Stanton, Joel McKinnon Miller, Matt Ross, Shawn Doyle and Mary Kay Place, just to name a few.

The show premiered on March 12, 2006 following the sixth season premiere of the acclaimed HBO mob series The Sopranos and earned favorable reviews, which eventually led to second season renewal. For its sophomore season, Big Love was nominated for a Golden Globe award for Best Drama Series in 2007.

‘Big Love’ Adds Mark L. Young to the Cast

Written on 18 August 2008 by

Last month, we brought you some big casting scoop to ease the wait for the third season of Big Love. Producers of the HBO polygamy-themed drama were reportedly casting at least four new faces to fill in the shoes of new characters that are expected to thicken the drama and tension on the series.

Among those new characters is Franky, the character of Bill’s (Bill Paxton) half-brother.  There is no word yet on how or why this character will suddenly turn up on Big Love so fans will just have to stay tuned to the new episodes to find out.  However, we did find out who has been cast to play the 16-year-old hottie and he comes in the form of Mark L. Young.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Mark L. Young has signed on to join the cast of Big Love. Aside from the fact that he’ll be playing Bill’s relative, he will reportedly get himself in big trouble as he gets kicked out of the Juniper Creek compound for kissing a girl already claimed by an elder.

Young, who is represented by Kohner and Precision, is no stranger to the small screen.  Previously, he recurrently played Eric Sheedy on the HBO series Six Feet Under, and landed a guest role on the teen drama
The O.C.
for two episodes.  Shortly after, he was offered more roles on series such as CSI, CSI: Miami, Cold Case, ER, and on Showtime’s psychological thriller Dexter, where he played Jeremy Downs.

In addition to Big Love, Young has several upcoming acting gigs slated for this year.  On September 26, he’ll be gracing the big screen in the comedy drama The Lucky Ones, which stars Rachel McAdams, Tim Robbins and Michael Peña.  The following month, he be appearing in Sex Drive, a movie about a horny teenager who brings his friends along on a road trip from Chicago to Knoxville to lose his virginity with a girl he met online.  And last but not the least, he’ll be starring in a drama called Happiness Runs, which is written and directed by Adam Sherman.

The cast and crew of the HBO series “Big Love” descended on Woodland on Saturday, part of a weeklong filming stint that will take them all over Yolo and neighboring counties, on-set sources said.

The Emmy-nominated series, which is entering its third season, centers around a modern polygamist family trying to live under the radar in suburban Salt Lake City, Utah.

The show stars Bill Paxton, Jeanne Tripplehorn, Chloe Sevigny, and Ginnifer Goodwin - all of whom were on hand Saturday at Woodland’s County Fair Mall, where the crew had set up “base camp.”

The show’s main set is located in Santa Clarita, northwest of downtown Los Angeles, but cast and crew arrived in Woodland Thursday night as part of a plot line that involves a family

road trip retracing the steps of Joseph Smith, Jr., the founder of Mormonism, according to Wayne Wall, the owner of Golden Star Security in Cameron Park. Wall’s company was hired to provide security while “Big Love” was in town filming, a process he expected to last through Aug. 15.

Most of the filming Saturday took place on Interstate 5 and Highway 113, Wall said. The crew simulated driving scenes by mounting the characters’ cars on flat-bed trucks surrounded by lighting equipment and cameras; the moving trucks give the appearance that the prop cars are actually being driven.

The crew started filming Friday in Coloma, in El Dorado County, best known as the site where James Marshall first discovered gold in California, Wall said.

Additional scenes will be shot over the coming week in Grasslands Regional Park in Davis, and in various parts of Old Sacramento, he said.

“Big Love” production staff would not offer any information about the filming schedule or plot details, saying it was against HBO policy.

Season 3 of the show, which counts Tom Hanks among its executive producers, is scheduled to kick off in January, according to the online movie and television database IMDB.com.
